Correspondence with Presidents of Kentucky Colleges
In the summer of 1954 Walter A. Groves sent several letters to fellow presidents in Kentucky, inquiring about their policies of admission regarding race. The Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education had come down in May of 1954, ruling segregation laws in American public schools were unconstitutional. While Groves had been contemplating the desegregation of Centre College since arriving in 1948, the Supreme Court decision provided a constitutional basis for the change Groves desired.
