Surveys Sent to Presidents of Kentucky Colleges
In the fall of 1954, Walter A. Groves created a brief survey he sent to fellow college presidents in Kentucky. His questions included, "Does your present policy permit you to accept qualified Negro applicants?" and "If policy does permit the acceptance of such applications, are there any particular requirements governing the acceptance of Negro students, or are Negro students accepted on the same basis as others?"
Several of the schools Groves contacted, including Berea College, Bellarmine College, and Georgetown College had no barriers in place restricting applicants based on race. Berea College and Bellarmine College both had Negro students enrolled in the fall of 1954, Georgetown College did not. Other schools continued to not admit Negro students in the fall of 1954, including Kentucky Wesleyan College, while others, like Nazareth College and Academy could only admit Negro students a day students due to insufficient dormitory space.
